Miami

Miami is my hometown. My parents met in Miami got married here, and I was born and raised here. Fast forward a couple decades...my 5 children were born in Miami (in the same hospital I was born in) too. I like to think I am Mrs. 305. When people think Miami, their minds automatically go to South Beach—don’t get me wrong I love South Beach—but Miami is not just that; not at all. Miami is the perfect combination of beauty, art, and fun all in one place.

When someone says they’re traveling to “Miami,” it is more the umbrella of South Florida: which includes Palm Beach down to the Florida Keys. Of course there are the typical tourist attractions you can find in every big city, but my experience will help you be both a local and the ultimate tourist. Miami is home to amazing beaches (long sandy shores and warm waters). It is the ultimate melting pot where people also proudly connect to their roots and celebrate each culture. Miami is a foodie’s dream come true, a playground for fashionistas, the perfect place to call home or come for a visit, where you can play ALL YEAR LONG!

Besides spending a day on the beach, Miami offers its visitors many options on the water. It is a MUST to experience Miami by boat. Day or night the beautiful skyline is made up of buildings lining the coast and lighting up the sky. The greatest way to appreciate the beauty of our peninsula is from the water looking in! Next, take a trip on the Miami River or take a seat at one of the great restaurants with a view. Then it’s time to dive in…spot dolphins, watch the manatees, snorkel, scuba dive, or go fishing. Whether you choose a particular destination or just in the wild, these marine activities are always available any day, any time.

Miami is home to special events and recreation options that connect you to sports, art and culture. Come ready to dance at music festivals-(Cuban or Electronic), watch your favorite singer (Latin, Hip-hop, or Pop), or enjoy a sporting event of your choice (every professional sport has events here). Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, because any event in Miami is a party. It’s not just about rooting on your favorite team. Here, every event is about the fun energetic fans who come together as a family to cheer, sing, and party with their team (my favorite is the Heat!)

Now, drive a little further and explore all the new areas that offer art, shopping, restaurants and more. Recently, in Brickell, young professionals have created a hub for a new type of city within our city. Living in Brickell is perfect for those who like to walk, are comfortable on the metro, and are interested in staying local. Bars, restaurants, malls and boutiques have created a new lifestyle for the modern younger generation.

For the artsy types, Miami has much to offer. All year round I recommend Wynwood (famous for graffiti walls) and art galleries. Trendy coffee shops and food destinations can be found among the color and design. For the more sophisticated art connoisseur, come and visit in December around Art Basel time and learn to “Basel” in Miami. Another option is the new and improved Design District which offers modern architecture, beautiful boutiques, and great chef restaurants. Last but not least is the world renown Bal Harbour Shops, you have to see it to experience luxury at its best.

Some people like to balance a trip with some nature. Our city offers seasonal “u-pick” farms which takes you back to basics, farm to table. A simple concept made into a special experience. Kids and adults relish in the opportunity to pick their own favorites of fruits and vegetables in a simple setting which is unforgettable.

Lastly, in Miami you can now spend the day cycling, skating, or simply watching at our new skateparks, pump tracks, or fitness tracks popping up all over town. For the more active visitor, this can be a great start to a new day or perfect way to end a long day too.

I love being a tourist in my own city. I love discovering new places, participating in local festivals, finding new restaurants, parks and playgrounds for my kids to play at; and believe me: there is ALWAYS something to do that you’ve never done before!

Although driving in Florida is very one dimensional, one special thing we have in Miami (and one of my favorite things to do) is the drive over the Julia Tuttle Causeway- the sky is so blue, the intracoastal waters are surrounding you and it‘s just bliss.

Vacationing in Miami is by far one of the easiest places with or without kids. We have sunny weather-and even when it does rain, wait a few minutes and watch as the sky clears up-so you can start your day all over again.
