CAMP LISA'S TOP LOCAL THINGS TO DO RIGHT NOW

Miami

Yes it’s summer, yes it’s hot (and often rainy), & yes we are living through a pandemic. But that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. Your kids are no longer tethered to their “Zoom rooms” so get out and get inspired because there are still fantastic things to do.

If you know me, you know how much I love Miami. I was born and raised here and love nothing better than to help people find adventure in this tropical “backyard.”

As long as you don’t mind being in the car for about an hour, there are adventures of every kind. My biggest tip is to get an early start on your day that way you can avoid larger crowds, and enjoy the cooler hours of the day.

Activities

If you’re the kind of person that loves beauty and science, Butterfly World is for you. Teach your kids all about the stages of metamorphosis while beauty flutters by--they’re offering ½ price through the end of July.

Although this is the farthest out of the way, it’s definitely worth your time. You have the luxury of seeing so many different animals from the comfort of your own car. It’s like an awesome drive through zoo! This is definitely a long activity so make sure to bring some snacks (and maybe even a travel potty). Note that water features are not open at this time.

Bring the Lysol and spray down your very own kayak for the hour or for the day! There’s no greater break from your 4 walls than getting out on the water and feeling its salty spray on your face.

Zen out on the clear waters of Key Biscayne--their transparent kayaks offer the best views above and below. Key Biscayne is one of Miami's greatest gems- the calm, shallow waters, and super soft sand are what make Key Biscayne so special. The kayaks are super easy to maneuver--my daughters were able to take their own kayaks out--and are available for rent Wednesday-Sunday. Make sure to mention that Camp Lisa sent you!

DRIVE-IN MOVIE THEATERS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK!

Although movies are going straight to Netflix or Amazon, many of us miss the big screen, popcorn, and focus of the movie theater. Drive-ins are as close to it as it gets and some might say it’s even better--kids may not even know drive-ins even exist! Check out these locations and make it a movie night to remember.

For social distancing purposes, you’ll have to choose a day and time slot in advance when purchasing tickets. It’s also important to note that their shows/ demos are cancelled for now but you can easily spend an awesome day here. Bring along a picnic blanket and lunch to enjoy under one of their many beautiful trees. The animals, birds, and vegetation (all outdoors) make this a fun stop for people of all ages--think botanical gardens and mini zoo giving visitors a taste of old Florida.

@ Amelia Earhart Park- if you haven’t been here yet then what are you waiting for? This is an activity for thrill seekers- water skiing, wakeboarding and lessons. There are activities for everyone here and nothing's better than being in the water during summer in Miami.

CAR WASH

I’m not talking about washing your car with your kids, which can be a lot of fun too! I actually mean go through an automatic car wash. The kids will love it so drive on through for a quick sensory experience—smell the soap, watch the foam spray and melt away, listen to the brushes whack the sides of the car and feel the car rock as it jostles side to side.

At Prestige Auto Spa they go all out! Their products and machines are all top of the line and environmentally conscious. Join their Text Club via https://www.prestigeautospa.com/ to receive a FREE wash and see what it’s all about.

Make it a Competition!

For some reason, turning anything into a competition between your kids always makes it that much more exciting. If prizes are involved for the winner, that kicks it up a notch even further.

CREATE THE BEST LEGO CHARACTER

Create the best Lego character: each kid thinks about someone they’d like to turn into a lego character, draw them and name them too!

Go on a bike ride and add in this fun little scavenger hunt. Help kids and adults notice the small things they might typically miss. Here’s just one example of the many possibilities.

Help your kids with all the ingredients they’ll need, but then have them all bake something. Maybe cookies, cupcakes or even just make a smoothie! Give it to someone else to be the judge.

In these stressful times it is so important to use healthy tools to help clear our minds and do positive things to burn some of that stress energy. That isn’t any different for children. Carolena Herz is an amazing certified Crossfit instructor, with 4 kids of her own. She teaches an awesome kids class everyday Monday- Friday at 4pm.
